To Purchase Or Consume Alchoholic Beverages
CONSEQUENCES OF UNDERAGE DRINKING
Underage Drinker
Mandatory loss of Driving Privilege
for 6 months (even if no car involved)
Minimum fine of $500.00
Disorderly Persons record
Participation in alcohol treatment or
rehabilitation program (at discretion of court)
Additional charges if false ID used (fine of not
more than $300.00 or imprisonment for no more
than 60 days}
Possible injury or death (excessive consumption
or traffic accident)
Minor (Who Is Under 17 Years Old)
In addition to the above
Mandatory postponement of driving privilege
for 6 months.
Mandatory suspension to operate a motorized
bicycle for 6 months
Bartender or Clerk
Any person found guilty of sales to an underage
person is guilty of a Disorderly Persons offense
The person may also lose his or her job.
Accomplice
Anyone 21 years of age or older who purchases
alcohol for or provides alcohol to an underage
person is subject to the same penalties as above.
Anyone 21 years of age or older who allows an
underage person to use his or her identification
for the purpose of obtaining alcoholic beverages
is subject to the same penalties as an underage
person who uses a false ID.
Owner of Liquor License
Any Liquor License associated with a sale to an
underage person is subject to suspension or revocation
with the resulting loss of business and even
livelihood. This can amount to thousands of dollars.
